Can you truly survive and thrive while seeking God on an empty stomach for over seven months? When I began my 221-day Christian fast, I wasn’t just looking for a physical challenge – I was desperate for a spiritual breakthrough that only comes through deep sacrifice.
Most people are familiar with the 21-day Daniel Fast, but stepping into a long-term biblical fast of 221 days taught me secrets about faith, discipline, and the power of the Holy Spirit that I never could have imagined. In this post, I’m sharing my raw testimony, the spiritual lessons I learned, and how God met me at every stage.
I fasted 221 days – and what happened changed my life completely. Watch this powerful testimony to see how God’s favor, breakthrough, and miracles manifested in ways you won’t believe:

(A quick note before you read on: fasting for extended periods is a serious spiritual and physical undertaking. Please talk to a doctor before attempting any long-term fast, especially one that limits water intake. My story is a testimony of my personal journey with God – not medical advice.)
## Why I Started
Before I embarked on the fast, my health was in danger. I was having excruciating heart pain, was depressed, obese, and dealing with urinary issues along with other health conditions. My destiny felt under attack, my family was under attack, and my career was under attack.
God is too faithful to fail, so I decided to embark on the fast to help me draw closer to Him. On the day I started, I was waiting to hear beautiful words from God, but instead He kept telling me, “I am no respecter of persons.” Throughout the fast I kept hearing this phrase and didn’t fully understand it – but toward the end, God explained it to me, and I’ll share that revelation below.
## How I Fasted
The fast followed a daily 6-to-6 pattern for 221 days straight: I began fasting at midnight and broke my fast in the evening – usually around 6 p.m., though some days it stretched to 7, 9, or even 11 p.m., depending on how long I spent in prayer. During the fasting window each day, I abstained from both food and water, only eating and drinking once the fast was broken for that day. When I did eat, it was mostly vegetables and beans, to help sustain me through such a long stretch of consecrated living.
Almost every day of the 221 days, I also kept midnight prayer to seek God’s face even more. During this season I developed a consistent rhythm of reading and meditating on God’s Word, day and night.
At one point, God told me He needed my full focus. I obeyed and stepped away from all social media so I could focus only on Him.
## Angelic Encounters and My Children’s Visions
This fast is something I will never forget, in part because of what my children experienced alongside me. Every time I wanted to break the fast early, my kids would join me in prayer instead. Over the course of those 221 days, my two older children (ages 5 and 6 at the time) ended up fasting with me on and off about 8 times; my youngest, then 2, didn’t fast with us.
One day after we broke the fast together, my daughter told me she’d seen Jesus hugging her and wiping away her tears. Over the next two nights, she woke me up around 2 a.m. saying she’d seen Jesus again and wanted to pray with me – so we prayed together.
The following night, my son woke up as I was praying at midnight and told me he had just seen Jesus hugging him. At first, I didn’t take their words too seriously – I assumed they were too young to really perceive something like that.
A few weeks later, I had my own encounters. On the same night, two angels of God visited me in dreams. At midnight, an angel opened the Bible and we read God’s Word together for hours, until my two-year-old’s cries woke me from sleep. That same day at 6 a.m., another angel visited and we read together again until I woke up.
From that day forward, God began explaining His Word to me – both explicitly and implicitly – with a clarity I hadn’t experienced before. I started reading Scripture more consistently and praying without ceasing.
Before I began the fast, I actually did a shorter 3-day fast first, asking God whether I should go ahead with the full 221 days. He confirmed that He would be with me through it.
## Spiritual Warfare and Protection
Temptation came – both physically and spiritually. I remember one day walking down a staircase; I should have fallen and broken my leg or ankle, but I felt suspended in the air, completely unharmed. God gave me victory on every side, even when the enemy came to tempt me in dreams. Because of my love for Jesus and my commitment to obedience, I overcame every trick.
He said, “You will find Me when you seek Me with your whole heart” (Jeremiah 29:13 – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Jeremiah%2029%3A13).
I also saw real deliverance during this season – for myself and for others I prayed for. Scripture says, “This kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting” (see Matthew 17 – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2017 – though I’d recommend double-checking this reference in your own Bible before publishing, since the exact verse varies slightly between translations).
## What “He Is No Respecter of Persons” Meant for Me
At every stage of the fast, I kept coming back to that phrase. What God was showing me is this: no matter who you think you are, or what status you carry, God does not show partiality – He responds to obedience and a surrendered heart, not to titles or self-importance. During the fast, He came through for my family in ways only He could.
## 7 Powerful Breakthroughs From My 221-Day Fast
1. Sensitivity to the Voice of God
Before this fast, I struggled to hear from God clearly. The 221 days broke that barrier. When you quiet the “noise” of your stomach, your spirit becomes like a high-definition radio – I no longer had to strain to hear Him. His direction became clear for my life, my career, and my family.
2. Breaking of Generational Chains
Through prayer during the fast, I experienced real breakthroughs – yokes and generational patterns were broken. Fasting is a spiritual weapon that pulls down strongholds. What I couldn’t change in my own strength, God changed in the spirit.
3. A Supernatural Increase in Self-Discipline
This was one of the greatest gifts of the fast. “No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize” (1 Corinthians 9:27 – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Corinthians%209%3A27). I learned true discipline – not obeying God because it’s pleasurable, but because it honors Him. That discipline now flows into my work, my finances, and my relationships. If you can say “no” to food for 221 days, you can say “no” to almost any temptation.
4. Clarity of Purpose and Vision
Many of us live in a mental fog. By the middle of my fast, that fog completely lifted. God began downloading specific vision for my future – including starting this very blog. Fasting cleanses your mind so you can see your calling clearly.
5. Physical and Emotional Healing
I experienced real physical healing – my energy came back, inflammation and depression lifted. I finally understood what it meant to walk in the fullness of 3 John 1:2 (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=3%20John%201%3A2): “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” The fast was spiritual, but the physical and emotional restoration was undeniable – God is the Great Physician of both soul and body.
6. Intercessory Power for Others
When I prayed for others during this long fast, I noticed faster, stronger results. There’s a specific weight of authority that comes with consecration. My prayers for friends and community felt more effective and “charged” with power.
7. Total Dependence on “Daily Bread”
I finally understood the verse, “Man shall not live by bread alone.” My 221-day fast proved that God’s Word is actual sustenance. I was being fed by the Spirit, and my hunger for the Bible grew stronger than my hunger for physical food.
## In Closing
The 221-day fast changed my life. It didn’t just draw me closer to God – it reshaped how I see discipline, purpose, healing, and prayer. If you’re considering a long fast of your own, go slowly, seek godly and medical counsel, and let God set the pace. He met me in ways I never expected, and I believe He’ll meet you too.
